Finding data to meet internal business needs within many organisations is still a major impediment to business success. As a result many poor decisions are made when the relevant data cannot be found. Executives today recognise that data has become a critical corporate resource and are spending large amounts of funds in seeking effective management of that resource. However, without a clear understanding of the data cycle within an organisation and without the recognition that the focus of those responsible for entering data is often misaligned with future use of that data organisations continue to have difficulty finding the data they need.
This paper provides a brief view of current data management practices and identifies the ‘missing’ element that is required to ensure an intelligent data management approach is used by organisations wishing to leverage their valuable data assets.
